| "PROPERLY POISED" - Etiquette Classes for Girls in Grades 6-9 |

| The six individual (1.5 hour) sessions of this class are focused on etiquette, dining and manners for everyday and special occasions. The intent of the course is to help launch confident young women into a successful pattern for life with emphasis on self-presentation skills, posture and walking/sitting, telephone etiquette, dining, correspondence, speaking correctly, interviewing skills, and other issues of courtesy and respect. |
| Two levels are offered: I and II (for those who have successfully completed Level I) |

| FIRST MEETING |
 |
| Goals: |
|
To help students understand and practice knowledgeable, courteous and considerate social behavior towards others.
|
|
To teach youngsters basic telephone and cell phone etiquette.
|
 |
| Topics: Making introductions and meeting new situations, shaking hands, walking, standing and sitting properly and with poise, understanding when to stand and where to walk with others (including at the theater), understanding table settings and one's role at a meal whether casual or formal, place settings, stemware, napkin use, the proper way to eat soup. Light food and beverage will be served. |

| SECOND MEETING |

| Goals: |
|
To help students understand the benefits of respect and courtesy in every area of their lives - with family, friends, teachers, and others.
|
|
To teach the necessity of and accepted practices of writing notes.
|
|
To build skills in other communication areas, including the telephone.
|
 |
| Topics: Manners at home, respect for feelings of others, privacy, one's own belongings and those of others, respect for plans, respect for confidences of family and friends, dining skills and table etiquette II, thank-you note format, letters, how to rsvp, proper phone usage and protocols, the voice in social situations and what it can convey. Light food and beverage will be served. |

| THIRD MEETING |

| Goals: |
|
To address more of the basic components of dining.
|
|
To increase students' awareness of their role in making mealtime or dining out a pleasant experience, and to increase their comfort level in both formal and casual meal venues.
|
 |
| Topics: Being seated at the table, table etiquette III including Continental and American styles of eating, passing food, unwanted food, table conversation and use of the voice. Food and beverage will be served. |

| FOURTH MEETING |
 |
| Goals: |
|
To continue the dining etiquette session with emphasis on conversational skills.
|
|
To build confidence for school or other interviews.
|
|
To make girls comfortable in new situations relating to family, school and social activities.
|
 |
| Topics: Positives resulting from use of good manners, respect and courtesy in everyday situations with family and friends, telephone etiquette II including the cell phone, table etiquette IV, deportment and grooming at the table, unique food situations (e.g., finger food, pizza, spaghetti, corn on the cob, gooey sandwiches, condiments), job or school interviews, creating trust, making a good impression. |

| FIFTH MEETING |
| (A combined session of our boys' and girls' classes for grades 6-9) |
 |
| Goals: |
|
To practice dining and speaking skills with a group in a restaurant setting.
|
 |
| Topics: Dining in a restaurant. Students practice what they have learned during a multi-course meal, using a full array of silver and glassware. Emphasis is on seating, awareness of one's table space, speaking briefly in front of group, thanking those responsible for the meal, handling coats, table conversation. Each student is also expected to make a one- to two-minute speech at table. |

| SIXTH MEETING |
 |
| Goals: |
|
To provide a wrap-up session that shows students how much they have learned.
|
|
To create a venue for communication with parents so that lessons can be reinforced and complemented at home.
|
 |
| Topics: This parent/student session provides a review of the concepts covered in prior sessions. Certificates of achievement will be presented. No food will be served. |

| SCHEDULING |
 |
| Class Size: To provide the maximum attention per student, classes are limited to five students in each section. The fifth session - dining out in a restaurant - is often combined with the boys' class for this age group. |
